Our History

Elysia is more than a place to stay - it's a story you step into.

In the heart of Chania's Old Harbor, where cobbled streets still echo with stories of merchants, emperors, and travelers, Elysia Boutique Hotel stands as a beautifully restored tribute to timeless elegance.

This is not just a building - it is a living monument shaped by centuries of Cretan, Byzantine, and Ottoman heritage.

Long ago, four separate homes stood here - each with its own rhythm, laughter, and legacy. Their weathered stone walls, hand-forged ironwork, and ornate balconies silently witnessed generations of life in the Old Town. These homes were not abandoned - they were thoughtfully reimagined.

With care and vision, the founders of Elysia wove these structures into one harmonious whole. Their goal was never to erase the past, but to let it live again - through respectful restoration and meaningful design.

Today, thirteen elegant suites reflect that vision, offering a stay where historic character and modern comfort exist side by side.

From your window, the Byzantine walls rise quietly in the distance. Around you, Venetian alleyways stretch into artisan shops, hidden courtyards, and the aroma of local tradition.

Every step here is a walk through time.

Beneath Today, Fragments of Centuries Past

At Elysia's ground level, history isn't displayed - it's present.

Beneath your feet, beneath today, lie remnants of everyday life from centuries ago - uncovered, respected, and preserved.

  • A section of wall rebuilt during the Ottoman period (1645-1898), featuring three original terracotta rainwater pipes.
  • A Venetian-era doorway fragment (1217-1645), a quiet reminder of all who once passed through it.
  • A preserved cistern used to collect and store rainwater - practical brilliance from another time.
  • Part of a reconstructed Ottoman-period floor, still standing as a symbol of domestic life.

These architectural elements have been carefully protected and seamlessly integrated into the hotel's design.

They were never buried - only waiting to be noticed again.

At Elysia, history is not behind us, but beneath us - and very much alive.
